Inspiration for Universal DesignThe inspiration for Universal Design for Learning comes from the desire to create a learning environment that reaches and inspires all students. This environment should cater to ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and academic diversity. Creating and using tools and strategies for learner perception, action and expression, along with incorporating student interest and engagement is the goal set for UDL.Outline for UDL The Universal Design for Learning structure includes: *3 Principles of UDL including multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement. *The central role of technology and how it lends tools to engaging all learners. *The potential impact on student learning and techniques for students to become expert learners of learning techniques. *Information and guidance provided by brain research and learning differences. *Technology expanded to meet the needs of all learners. *Resources and tools available for curriculum, activities, and support. Physical Environment The physical environment for UDL is one that allows all students to thrive and meets the needs of acquiring information through means of different modalities such as audio, visuals, images, text, graphics, video, music, art, or physical representations. The use of symbols, expression through mathematics, and language, along with teachings in syntax and structure provide a more conducive learning environment for all learners. An example of this would include a student that struggles with reading text using a text to speech software system. This environment contributes to student expression by providing opportunities for physical enhancements, various means of navigation of tools, communication and construction, and executive functions through goal setting, monitoring, and reflection. Examples of this would include a student that is not physically capable of using a computer mouse and using a joystick instead. A student that has difficulty writing creating podcasts. UDL strategies create learning environments that entice learning through interest, motivate students to develop stamina for attention and effort, and utilize self regulation techniques for optimum learning. Students that see modeling of skills for self checking and implementation can apply those skills and sharpen them. Use the Link below to get a quick look on how UDL works: |
